Brenda, thanks for commenting. I think it's just so hard to see in black and white what actually can get done (as opposed to what we would like to see happen that day or what we feel we really should be getting done) that we go ahead and make lists that we know won't get done. I like your idea of long-term list and daily list. I try to come up with some things to focus on every week (above and beyond the regular things I do) and also list out what I've decided I'm just not going to get to that week. That is my favorite list!

Then if I notice something stays on the long term list for months, I really try to take it off. Seeing it week after week is a drain.

And I remind myself that it won't ever be all done, so I try to stop myself from believing that getting it all done is the measure of success. There are so many other more important measures, like the quality of my relationships with other people and how well I'm taking care of myself.

Heather, you've created a very helpful business and website. I plan to check out many of the blogs you recommend. As for this post, I think you are so right about setting realistic goals. Although I know how important this is, I still find myself making lists that I know flat out won't get done. I've been trying to break it down lately, so there is a long-term list of things to do and a daily list of things to do. This seems to help me feel more productive at the end of the day. There's nothing like seeing a list with items crossed off, as opposed to looking at the same items that get carried over from day to day to week, etc. Thanks for the great posts.

Judith, thanks for letting us know what's happening with you. You really are dealing with a lot. Feeling "lost in your own skin" sounds overwhelming. I hope that you're able to utilize some agencies in your area to get some respite care.

Hi Paula,
I feel exactly what you are going thru in my life of taking care of my mother-n-law, taking care of my preteen son and teenage daughter, housework, laundry, my spouse and a part-time job. I feel lost in my own skin. Your web site is very helpful for me and many other women and moms in the sandwich generation. I know that we have local agencies that can help come in and help care for our elderly parents with housekeeping, preparing for meals/snacks and sitting with them to give us breaks to spend with our own families.
Thanks again and I hope you can find help with caring for your elderly parents.
