Well, first of all, you may be wondering just what a mom in the balance is.
She’s a mother who juggles responsibilities for her kids and her parents or parents-in-law. This makes her a mom in the sandwich generation, because she feels squeezed between caring for the older and younger generations in her family. I call her a mom “in the balance”, because she’s uncertain, unsettled and at a turning point.
Many moms in the balance are also careerists who are up to something big in their professional lives. They are managers, holders of newly earned advanced degrees, on the verge of a promotion, or returning to paid work. This means that they are taking on new responsibilities in all areas of their lives!
According to a recent American Psychological Association survey, “Mothers in the ‘sandwich generation,’ ages 35-54, feel more stress than any other age group as they balance the demanding, delicate acts of caring for growing children and their aging parents.”
Are you familiar with the following experiences and feelings that are common to moms in the balance?
They feel overwhelmed by how fast the needs of their parents and their kids are changing and feel stuck about how best to respond and how to make good decisions.
They have hectic schedules and feel frustrated about time – there’s never enough of it and it just seems to melt away.
They’re so busy raising their children and taking on more responsibilities for their parents that they feel as if they’ve lost themselves. Meanwhile, their resentment (toward practically everyone) is building
They want to focus on their careers but can’t figure out how to do that and attend to family needs at the same time.
They’re trying their best to be “good” mothers and “good” daughters, but they don’t feel like they’re doing any of it well.
Many of them were looking forward to becoming empty nesters, but now find themselves facing many more years of care giving. They feel guilty for being so disappointed, and all of their family relationships are feeling the strain.
Being independent and resourceful women, they are now stretched to the limit taking care of everyone else by themselves and have a hard time asking for help or even recognizing when they need it.
If any of these sound familiar, you’re a mom in the balance. My passion is to create innovative solutions that inspire and support these moms to thrive when life feels stressful, chaotic, and too challenging.
Thriving isn’t easy, however. It takes optimism, commitment, and guts. Are you that person?
See how many of the following are true for you:
Your roles as a mother and daughter are shifting.
You are stressed yet functional, and you are not clinically depressed or in crisis.
You have some kind of basic support system (friends, family, or a faith community, etc.)
You want to learn how to be more optimistic and you are hopeful that this is possible.
You’re open to examining and challenging negative thought patterns.
You’re willing to entertain new ways of being, doing, and thinking.
You find some relief from talking about what you’re going through.
You appreciate that a sense of humor is essential.
If most or all of those describe you, you’re a mom in the balance with the strengths to thrive during these challenging years and make them a hopeful, even joyful, experience.
Whether you’re a 33 year-old new mom on maternity leave who has a father who’s in the early stages of Alzheimer’s or you’re a 53 year-old corporate director with teenagers and a widowed mother-in-law who is moving to your city, you have the opportunity to follow your own dreams and retain your strong sense of self as you do well by those who depend on you.

“ I have accepted and have “inner peace” about how to be an engaged mom while working full-time that resulted from this process. I also feel much more energized and inspired to look at other things in my life and consider new ways of doing things. I feel like a new woman! I can’t thank you enough for your help getting to this point. I never thought that was possible. ”
